DePaul Community Resources, in partnership with Carilion Clinic, is pleased to introduce a series of leadership forums designed to provide families, social service providers, and business professionals with innovative tools and techniques for addressing ethical challenges.
DESCRIPTION
This highly interactive, full-day seminar will provide attendees with the opportunity to discuss ethical issues related to the health and well-being of our community. The session will begin by reviewing a practical approach to managing professional ethical issues. Participants will also review and discuss case studies that highlight professional boundaries; autonomy and risk; confidentiality and competing interests; and concerns among providers, family members, and children.
OBJECTIVES
- To demonstrate a pragmatic technique to identify, analyze, and resolve ethical issues.
- To review the concepts of autonomy and capacity and apply these concepts to person-centered planning and the dignity of risk.
- To define ethical issues involving boundaries/confidentiality and show how attention to these concepts can assist in the ethical resolution of practical issues.
SPEAKER: MICHAEL A. GILLETTE, Ph.D.
Dr. Gillette attended Brandeis University as an undergraduate where he graduated magna cum laude with majors in philosophy and classical Greek and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. He went to Brown University for his master’s and Ph.D. in philosophy where he wrote his dissertation. “Paternalism in Psychiatric Medicine: A Philosophical Perspective.” Dr. Gillette has taught philosophy at several colleges and universities, received tenure at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, published articles in the field of clinical ethics, and received numerous teaching awards. He is currently President of Bioethical Services at Virginia, Inc., a medical ethics consulting business. In addition to providing policy and case consultation services, Dr. Gillette is a dynamic speaker who presents to audiences around the country.
