A longtime reporter who specializes in outsiders and underdogs, Beth Macy is the author of the Lukas Prize-winning, national bestseller Factory Man: How One Furniture Maker Battled Offshoring, Stayed Local – and Helped Save an American Town. She has won more than a dozen national journalism awards, including a Nieman Fellowship for Journalism at Harvard. She has been published in Oprahmagazine, Parade, The New York Times, Salon, and The Christian Science Monitor. Her new book, Truevine: Two Brothers, a Kidnapping, and a Mother’s Quest: A True Story of the Jim Crow South, is the story of two African American brothers who were kidnapped at the turn of the 20th century and exhibited as circus freaks. It was one of six books shortlisted for the Kirkus Prize in the nonfiction category. Q&A with the author, February 24, 11 am, Hollins Room, Wyndham Robertson Library.
